Inventors Makers and Movers (IMM) celebrates African American invention as a vital expression of creativity, resilience and cultural intelligence. From 1865 to 1939, African Americans emerged from slavery into a society that recognized freedom in law while continuing to impose profound economic, educational, racial and social barriers. Even under those conditions, IMM has documented 923 patents issued to African American inventors.
These inventors transformed observation, necessity, resolve and imagination into new ways of working, traveling, communicating, farming, manufacturing and living. In doing so, they generated new aesthetic values, ways of recognizing beauty and creative intelligence in accomplishment, adaptation, the negotiation of constraint and the transformation of circumstance.
Their inventions are more than technical solutions; they reveal a creative tradition. IMM asks us to consider invention not only as a history of objects, but as a history of thought, and to recognize African American innovation as art, culture, enterprise and community.
ART
IMM brings African American invention into conversation with contemporary art. Artists interpret historical inventions through sculpture, installation, photography, sound, film, performance, design and emerging media. By examining both the invention and the circumstances that produced it, they reveal how constraint can generate form, and how necessity can become possibility.

BUSINESS
The story of invention does not end with the patent. Many inventions became foundations for products, industries and enterprises that continue to shape daily life. IMM invites businesses connected to these histories to participate in a living continuum of innovation.
The inventor marks an origin. The artist reinterprets it. The business extends its relevance.

COMMUNITY
An exhibition should do more than occupy a gallery. It should create movement beyond it. Through education, workshops, internships, mentorship, entrepreneurship and STEAM engagement, IMM connects historical knowledge with contemporary opportunity. Young people encounter these inventors not simply as names to memorize, but as examples of what becomes possible when intelligence, curiosity and imagination are applied to real problems.
The lesson is not only what they invented. The deeper lesson is how they thought.

IMM stands at the intersection of art, invention, history, business and community. We recover histories too often left outside the center of American cultural life—and activate them through exhibitions, education and opportunity.
The inventors who emerged after Emancipation did more than make things. They demonstrated a way of thinking: they observed, adapted, reimagined, transformed and made necessity productive.
Inventors Makers and Movers exists to honor that creative intelligence, illuminate its continuing influence and carry it forward.
